Thousands attend lobby of Parliament for a referendum

Between two and three thousand people from across the country came to Westminster today to lobby their MPs for a referendum on the revived Constitutional Treaty.

Pictures of people attending the event are available at www.iwantareferendum.com

Tony Benn told people queuing to lobby their MPs: "This is how you get democracy."

Simon Wolfson CEO of Next plc, told a public meeting afterwards: "It's great to see so many people turn out to make politicians listen to the people."

Thomas Rupp from the European Referendum Campaign said: "It is great that so many people are here.  This is about democracy, and this is about accountability."

Roger Cole from the Irish no campaign said: "We're having a vote in Ireland and people in Britain should be allowed a say too."

Stuart Coster from the Democracy Movement said: "People have given up their time to send a message to politicians.  Now it's time for MPs to listen."

Derek Scott, Chairman of I Want a Referendum said: "MPs who have met their constituents today should listen and remember the promise of a referendum which they made at the last election."
