I Want a Referendum campaign takes spoof traffic signs to EU summit

PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE

13-14 DECEMBER 2007

I Want a Referendum campaign takes spoof traffic signs to EU summit

At this week's EU summit in Brussels, the I Want a Referendum campaign set up spoof road signs which show how the EU is out of touch with its voters and is heading in the wrong direction - as the reheated Constitution is signed behind closed doors while voters must "keep out".

Tony Blair's former Economics Advisor and I Want a Referendum Chairman Derek Scott said:

EU leaders have brought back the rejected EU Constitution under a new name and – fearful of a repeat of the French and Dutch no votes – have agreed to avoid referendums at all costs. This is a profoundly undemocratic process. Running away from letting the people have the say they were promised on this treaty will mean it has no legitimacy – in the long run this is bad for democracy and bad for Europe.”

“Gordon Brown was elected on a manifesto promise of a referendum on the EU Constitution. He must be held to that promise. Holding a referendum is an opportunity for him to show whether he is really serious about restoring trust in politics, and to answer the critics who say he lacks courage and decisiveness.”
